We tried a new recipe for a fortified feed block that works really well and is a little easier to make than our homemade molasses deer lick. The idea actually came from watching a video on how to make homemade granola.

Fortified Feed Block

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of rolled oats (e.g. Cheap Oatmeal)
  • 1 cup of deer corn
  • 1 cup of corn meal
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of corn syrup or molasses
  • 1/2 cup of peanut or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of salt

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Put rolled oats, corn, corn meal, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Stir corn syrup, brown sugar, and vegetable oil in a separate smaller bowl.
  • Pour liquid mixture into large bowl and mix ingredients together well. It is easiest to mix with your hands, but you may want to wear rubber gloves.
  • Put mixture in large deep pan and spread evenly.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes and then take the pan out and stir around mixture.
  • Bake for another 12-15 minutes and take the pan out of the oven and let it cool for a while. Press the contents in a mold of your choice or let cool as is and break into smaller pieces.

Applications:

There are many applications and variations for what we call “fortified feed” and its really fun to come up with your own concoction or special recipe. Try mixing and matching different types of grain (i.e. oats, corn, soybeans, rice bran) or adding more salt and minerals, peanut butter, fruit, and the list goes on and on.

Basically, you are taking feed that deer already eat in your area and enhancing it even more. Good luck and please do share your experiences with our members. We want to hear from you!

We started making our own peanut butter by simply blending roasted peanuts with peanut oil, but realized its still difficult to find large quantities of roasted peanuts for a reasonable price. However, they are now offering 50lb bags of Roasted Soybeans at feed stores. It is still pretty expensive, but much cheaper than buying that many roasted peanuts.

Ingredients:

1. Roasted Soybeans
2. Peanut Oil

Directions:

  • Add two cups of roasted soybeans in blender and crush to the consistency of regular coffee grind.
  • Add 2/3 cup of oil and turn blender on low speed to mix ingredients.
  • Continue to add more oil until you get the consistency you desire.

You can experiment same as with the homemade peanut butter, including adding some molasses or even throw in some acorns or something that deer are already eating in your area.

It would be great to hear different ways to apply larger amounts of peanut/soybean butter since we can make large quantities cheaper now!

Real simple trick to keep squirrels and raccoons from climbing your tripod  feeders is to smear Vaseline on the poles.

Couple of cool video links below showing squirrels trying to climb feeders with Vaseline applied:
